Happy Halloween!

Filed under: Parenting, Personal, Political — nigelmoose @ 12:34 pm

Am I the only one who still calls it “Halloween”? The boy’s daycare is having an “Orange and Black” Party today, and my office is showing a scary movie in the conference room this afternoon to celebrate “Harvest Day.” I guess Halloween is the latest thing to fall prey to political correctness?

Anyway, we’re still celebrating Halloween at the House of Nigelmoose. I’m taking the boy (a/k/a Bob the Builder) on his first trick-or-treat outing tonight.  Wish us luck!

Hey Freecyclers: Let’s not get carried away

Some things you should just throw away, m’kay?

“Offered: This opened and 2/3 full box of Wheat Thins expired on 16 Oct 2006, so
it’s not for eating, but thought someone creative might be able to use
it for some kind of Arts & Crafts Project?”

My first meme

Filed under: Goofy, Personal — nigelmoose @ 4:15 pm

Just because I’ve never done one before, here it is:
1. Name one person who made you laugh last night? The boy as he questioned me about the differences between boys and girls.  I waited until I left the room to laugh, but his remarks were pretty funny.
2. What were you doing at 0800? Waiting for the bus that takes me to the Metro station.
3. What were you doing 30 minutes ago? Troubleshooting a problem in our new craptastic online election system.
4. What happened to you in 2006? Gave birth to baby girl!
5. What was the last thing you said out loud? “Well, at least it’s a warm body.  They are lucky to have that!”
6. How many beverages did you have today? Five so far. Two coffees, two glasses of water, and a large glass of milk with lunch.
7. What color is your hairbrush? Black
8. What was the last thing you paid for? Metro fare for my morning commute.
9. Where were you last night? At home with the family.
10. What color is your front door? White
11. Where do you keep your change? In an old birdfood canister on my dresser.
12. What’s the weather like today? Cloudy and rainy—a welcome sight after months of drought.
13. What’s the best ice-cream flavor? Coconut chip from Graeters in Columbus OH
14. What excites you? A great book, a gorgeous day, a new knitting project, losing weight, seeing my husband and kids, getting flowers—wow, how domesticated I am!
15. Do you want to cut your hair? No, I’m still recovering from the last haircut, which I wasn’t thrilled with.
16. Are you over the age of 25? Yes, a bit.
17. Do you talk a lot? Depends.  At work, no.  When husband is trying to read the paper, yes. J
18. Do you watch the O.C.? Never seen it.
19. Do you know anyone named Steven? Yes, several.
20. Do you make up your own words? I don’t know—am I the only one who says scaddy-waggled?
21. Are you a jealous person? Only a little.  I usually keep it in check.
22. Name a friend whose name starts with the letter ‘A’. Andrea
23. Name a friend whose name starts with the letter ‘K’. Kim
24. Who’s the first person on your received call list? My sister
25. What does the last text message you received say? “It’s not a minivan.” (My sister’s stubborn insistence about her Chrysler Pacifica.)
26. Do you chew on your straw? Never.
27. Do you have curly hair? Just enough to make it hard to manage.
28. Where’s the next place you’re going to? Home from work.
29. Who’s the rudest person in your life? It’s a tie between two of my colleagues.
30. What was the last thing you ate? Tamale pie, sauteed zucchini, and an apple for lunch.
31. Will you get married in the future? I hope not—I’m expecting the current one to be a keeper.
32. What’s the best movie you’ve seen in the past 2 weeks? Word Wars.  Which was fine, but I’ve only seen two movies lately, so there isn’t much competition for “best.”
33. Is there anyone you like right now? Sure, there are lots of people I like.
34. When was the last time you did the dishes? Last night I did kitchen duty while my husband did the bedtime routine with the kids.
35. Are you currently depressed? Not at the moment, though I have been a little moody the past few weeks.
36. Did you cry today? No reason to yet.
37. Why did you answer and post this? Never done one before.

American Dream: hard work, not handouts

Filed under: Illegals — nigelmoose @ 10:43 am

Spot-on post by Big Stupid Guy regarding a boo-hoo article in the Washington Post yesterday about the effects of a long-overdue crackdown (at least on a local level) on illegal immigration.

The difference, Eduardo, is that the Italian and Irish immigrants of yesteryear came with empty pockets, but not outstretched, expectant hands…..

We Americans are sorry that your American Dream has been dashed, Eduardo. But most of us are sick of buying that dream for you, making our own respective American Dreams that much less affordable. You looked out for yourself and your family – and only yourself and your family – as you cross that border, so why do you fault us for doing the same?

Happy Birthday, son!

Filed under: Parenting, Personal — nigelmoose @ 10:48 am

Wow, four years old!  Getting taller and more grown up by the day.  A million questions.  Strong opinions.  So protective toward, and proud of, your baby sister.  Curious.  Persistent.  Loving.  Playful.  Silly.  Smart.  All that and so much more.

Happy birthday, champ.  We love you so much!

RIP John Berthoud

Filed under: Personal — nigelmoose @ 12:56 pm

Those of us who knew him are still reeling from the shock of National Taxpayers Union President John Berthoud’s sudden death last week at the age of 45. Well-known and highly respected in the policy world, on a personal level he was a funny, kind, and humble man. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to all of his family and friends.  An announcement of his passing and the outpouring of response by friends and colleagues can be seen on the NTU blog.

Most of us–and especially those of us in our 30s and 40s–take for granted that we will wake up each morning to enjoy another day. John’s death is a sad reminder that nothing in this life is guaranteed.
