Happy Birthday Baby Girl!

Filed under: Parenting, Personal — nigelmoose @ 12:44 pm

A year ago today you joined us and nothing has been the same since.  Your sweet nature, infectious smile, and cuddly ways have brought so much joy into our lives.  Your big brother adores you, and it seems you feel the same way about him, wanting to be where he is and do whatever he is doing.

Happy birthday, baby girl!  It’s been a great first year.  Can’t wait to see what the next one brings!

Loyalty oath? No way.

As Bush the Elder might say, “Not gonna do it…”

What is the Virginia GOP thinking?  The recent announcement by the state Republican party that anyone wishing to vote in the Virginia GOP primary will be required to sign an oath promising to vote for the party’s eventually nominee in the general election is being roundly criticized by those on both sides of the aisle.

At the risk of forfeiting my voice in my party’s candidate selection, I will not sign any such oath.  I don’t care if it is secret and therefore unenforceable.  An oath should be meaningful and binding, and if it’s not, why ask me to sign it anyway?

“Hate crimes” up?

Filed under: Political — nigelmoose @ 12:33 pm

I don’t understand this distinction of hate crimes.  By creating a special category of “hate crimes,” we add a severity of punishment for thought in addition to action.  Aren’t all violent crimes hateful?  Why is one victim’s suffering worthy of more severe punishment than another’s when both were equally injured?

No touching!

No touching!

In a previous post, I mentioned that some schools are now banning tag because some students might not want to be chased and don’t have the wherewithal to say “hey, stop chasing me.”

In further “Is this really the biggest problem facing our schools” news, in Alabama and Missouri students were disciplined for giving friends a hug. From all reports, it sounds like in neither case were the hugs the sort that would be considered by a reasonable person to be inappropriate–we’re not talking full-out groping here. But the schools apparently can’t, or won’t, use common sense to distinguish hugs of a friendly nature from those of a “get-a-room” variety.
