Remembering Susan G. Santo on 9/11

SusanGSanto

She was 24 years old and had a young daughter.  She went to work on September 11, 2001, at Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. in the North Tower of the World Trade Center.  She was killed that day as a victim of coordinated terrorist attacks against the United States.

I did not know Susan G. Santo, but I’ve been thinking of her almost constantly since I pledged to write a tribute to her as part of Project 2,996.  I asked to be randomly assigned a name, and being a mother of young children myself, it was especially poignant to have the name of a young mother as my honoree.  I’ve been able to find some information about her online, mere snippets of a full and rich life, but they begin to paint a picture of the woman whose life was taken that day.

In words from those who knew her, she is remembered for her goofiness, humor, strength, determination, and her devotion to her daughter.  To some she was Sue, Susie, Susan.  To online friends she was “mbossy” and her daughter “lil bossy.”  She was a fan of the Mets (and especially Mike Piazza), Junior’s Cheesecake and the musical group Barenaked Ladies.  I remember and mourn today for Susan, this woman I did not know, for the stolen life, the lost potential, the tragically premature separation of mother and child.

One friend, who chatted with Susan online, wrote in a tribute:

“I remember one of our last ‘talks’ together, how you told me you were worried your daughter would end up like you, without a mom. I told you not to think like that, you were young and had years with her.”

I pray for her daughter, father, brother, family and friends, that they might find comfort in their memories of Susan, and from each other in their common grief.  It’s an honor to have this chance to commemorate her today.  May we always remember Susan and the other victims who were murdered so horrifically that day.

More tributes from Project 2,996.

Aw, that’s a shame

“I want my money today! It’s my money. I want it right now!” yelled one former campaign worker.

Not breaking promises already, are we?

In other news, my new t-shirt should be here any day now:

With a spoonful of sugar…

…to mask the bitter taste, I jumped on board.  He is not my first choice, not my second, but a heck of a lot better than anything the Dems are offering up.

So I slapped this button on my shoulder bag, not as a ringing endorsement, but as a counter to all the Hillary and BO promotions I’ve been seeing around my neighborhood.

This case screams for the death penalty

Assuming he’s found guilty, of course.  This case in Alabama is a no-brainer.

Authorities searched Wednesday for the bodies of four children believed to have been thrown off a bridge by their father after he had a dispute with his wife.

Lam Luong, 37, of Irvington confessed Tuesday night to driving to the Dauphin Island bridge, stopping and tossing the youngsters off the span, which is as high as 80 feet above the water in places, Detective Scott Riva said. Luong faced charges of four counts of capital murder and was due in court Wednesday, Riva said.

Loyalty oath? No way.

As Bush the Elder might say, “Not gonna do it…”

What is the Virginia GOP thinking?  The recent announcement by the state Republican party that anyone wishing to vote in the Virginia GOP primary will be required to sign an oath promising to vote for the party’s eventually nominee in the general election is being roundly criticized by those on both sides of the aisle.

At the risk of forfeiting my voice in my party’s candidate selection, I will not sign any such oath.  I don’t care if it is secret and therefore unenforceable.  An oath should be meaningful and binding, and if it’s not, why ask me to sign it anyway?

“Hate crimes” up?

Filed under: Political — nigelmoose @ 12:33 pm

I don’t understand this distinction of hate crimes.  By creating a special category of “hate crimes,” we add a severity of punishment for thought in addition to action.  Aren’t all violent crimes hateful?  Why is one victim’s suffering worthy of more severe punishment than another’s when both were equally injured?

No touching!

No touching!

In a previous post, I mentioned that some schools are now banning tag because some students might not want to be chased and don’t have the wherewithal to say “hey, stop chasing me.”

In further “Is this really the biggest problem facing our schools” news, in Alabama and Missouri students were disciplined for giving friends a hug. From all reports, it sounds like in neither case were the hugs the sort that would be considered by a reasonable person to be inappropriate–we’re not talking full-out groping here. But the schools apparently can’t, or won’t, use common sense to distinguish hugs of a friendly nature from those of a “get-a-room” variety.
